Noise Blanker for the SS-1R

The SS-1R's noise blanker was a rather sophisticated device. As you can see from the photo above, it is remotely located in the speaker cabinet. It featured tube i.f. amplifiers, noise detector and pulse shaper. The noise gate was a transistor in the 1 MHz i.f. chain. Cables from the 1 MHz i.f. are brought to the noise blanker, pass through the noise gate transistor and is then immediately returned to the receiver. The noise and signal where extracted from the 5 MHz i.f. before the filters stretched out the noise pulses. This system was featured in a QST article and follows the same sophistication and uniqueness of the balanced, 7360 tube, frontend in the SS-1R receiver itself.
